Spain thrash Switzerland, advance to first ever quarter-finals

Spain put on a scintillating performance to secure a historic 5-1 victory over Switzerland in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, booking their place in the quarter-finals for the first time ever.

After suffering a disappointing 4-0 defeat against Japan in their final group game, Spain came back with a vengeance in the round of 16 encounter. Aitana Bonmati opened the scoring for Spain in the 5th minute, but an unfortunate own goal by Laia Codina in the 11th minute allowed Switzerland to draw level momentarily.

However, Spain quickly regained control, and Alba Redondo restored their lead on the 17th minute, making it 2-1. Bonmati continued to shine, adding her second goal of the match on the 36th minute, extending Spain’s lead to 3-1.

Just before halftime, Codina redeemed herself by scoring at the right end, putting Spain 4-1 ahead. In the second half, Jenni Hermoso sealed the emphatic victory with a goal in the 70th minute, leaving Switzerland with no chance of a comeback.

The resounding win marked a significant milestone for Spanish women’s football, as they progressed to the quarter-finals of the prestigious tournament for the first time in their history.

In the second round of 16 clash on the same day, former world champions Japan and Norway will battle it out for a spot in the quarter-finals, promising another thrilling encounter in the ongoing Women’s World Cup.
