FIFA lifts ban on Sri Lanka after election pledge

Sri Lanka’s football suspension, imposed by FIFA in January, has been officially revoked in light of guarantees received regarding the absence of political intervention within the sport in the country. The local Football Federation of Sri Lanka (FFSL) confirmed this development on Tuesday.

In response to the FFSL’s efforts, FIFA conveyed a letter to the federation, formally rescinding the ban. This action came after FIFA acknowledged upcoming plans for fresh elections within the FFSL next month. Moreover, the sports ministry’s commitment to allowing the FFSL to operate independently, free from governmental influence, was taken into account.

The global governing body of football assured that it, along with the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), will closely monitor the situation leading up to the FFSL elections scheduled for September 29, 2023.

Sri Lanka’s men’s national football team holds a global ranking of 204, while the women’s team is positioned at 153 in the world.

Notably, Sri Lanka’s involvement in rugby also experienced suspension by the sport’s world governing body in May.
