Fire destroys 6 shops, goods worth millions of naira in Calabar
A devastating fire erupted at the Watt market, a popular shopping hub in Calabar, Cross River, causing the destruction of merchandise valued at millions of naira. The fire, which ignited around 2:00 am on Thursday, engulfed at least six shops within the market.
Mrs. Olumayowa Olomola, the Commanding Officer of the Calabar Command for the Federal Fire Service, confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN). She attributed the fire to a power surge originating from one of the shopping centers within the market.
Olomola said, “Our response was timely and we could only prevent the fire from spreading beyond the six affected shops.
“My advice is that we should always adopt preventive measures by ensuring we put off all appliances to avoid incidents like this.”
