NAFDAC threatens to shut down bakeries using bromate, saccharin in bread
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a warning to bakeries nationwide against the use of saccharin and bromate in bread production.
Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, the agency’s Director-General, issued the warning during a segment on a News Forum. She stated that any bakery found using these harmful substances would face severe consequences.
“Through our post-marketing surveillance, we routinely inspect products, sometimes prompted by complaints received via our reform office,” she explained.
“We have already shut down several bakeries for using bromate in bread production. If we discover its presence, or if it’s reported or detected in the bread, we will close the bakery.”
Adeyeye also mentioned that numerous water factories had been closed due to substandard production or unhygienic practices.
“Our Regulatory Inspection Directorate plays a crucial role in ensuring that products meet standards from registration to market release,” she continued. “At the start, we inspect facilities, collect samples, and test the products. However, some manufacturers alter their processes after registration, which is why ongoing post-marketing surveillance is essential. This ensures that what was initially approved remains the same in the market, thus maintaining quality standards.”
