Otukpo comes alive as Idoma International Carnival ushers in memorable Christmas
The ancient city of Otukpo, ancestral heart of the Idoma people, erupted in jubilation on Christmas Day, marking the third day of the Idoma International Carnival procession.
This year’s edition, the twelfth, transformed the streets of Nigeria’s acclaimed “Texas Town” into a vibrant spectacle.
A sea of revelers, both locals and Idoma natives from far and wide, descended upon the city, donning outlandish costumes to celebrate the festive season and partake in the largest street party in north of the Niger River.
Leading the procession, , the carnival’s founder and president Dr Edwin Ochai, mounted on horseback, traversed the city’s main thoroughfares, met with cheers from the enthusiastic crowd.
For him, this annual fiesta is a testament to his commitment to the Idoma community, a reminder that there’s truly “no place like home.”
The Deputy Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly expressed the state’s pride in Dr. Ochai, acknowledging his consistent efforts to make Christmas an unforgettable experience for the Idoma people every year.
His Excellency, HRM Agabaidu Elaigwu Odogbo, Och’Idoma V, the paramount ruler of Idoma land, praised Dr. Ochai’s initiative, stating that his efforts are worthy of emulation and deserve the support of all.
