Manchester United need more players like Bruno Fernandes – Amorim
Manchester United require more players with the talent and leadership qualities of captain Bruno Fernandes, according to manager Ruben Amorim, following the Portuguese midfielder’s sensational free-kick in Sunday’s 1-1 draw against Arsenal.
Fernandes has been under scrutiny for his captaincy, with former United leader Roy Keane recently branding him an “imposter.” However, in another disappointing season for the Red Devils, he has consistently been one of the few bright spots.
His stunning first-half strike at Old Trafford marked his 12th goal of the campaign, reinforcing his importance to the squad. With Amad Diallo—currently sidelined with an injury—United’s second-highest goalscorer with nine, Fernandes’ contributions have been vital.
“It’s obvious we need more players like Bruno,” Amorim said. “Not just for his quality but for his character, his availability in this demanding league, and his decisive impact both with and without the ball.”
Amorim’s tenure at United has been marked by mixed performances. While his side has impressed against top opposition—drawing at league leaders Liverpool, knocking Arsenal out of the FA Cup, and securing a crucial win at Manchester City—United have struggled in games where they are expected to dominate, leaving them languishing in 14th place.
Despite playing at Old Trafford, United saw just over 30% possession against Arsenal. Amorim acknowledged his preference for a more attacking approach, rather than sitting deep and defending.
“In the future, I want to play a different style of football,” he said. “I want us to spend more time attacking in the final third rather than defending in a low block. But the team’s spirit, their commitment to the plan, and their unity are positives we can build on.”
