A Lagos State High Court sitting at Tafawa Balewa Square has sentenced Lagos Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) driver, Andrew Nice Ominikoron, to death by hanging for the murder of 22-year-old fashion designer, Bamise Ayanwola.

Justice Sherifat Sonaike delivered the verdict on Friday, convicting Ominikoron of the brutal killing which occurred in February 2022.

Ominikoron, along with unidentified accomplices still at large, was found guilty of conspiracy, rape, and murder. The court held that the evidence presented by the prosecution proved beyond reasonable doubt that Ominikoron was directly involved in the heinous crimes.

The case gained national attention after Bamise went missing following her entry into a BRT bus operated by Ominikoron. Her lifeless, partially clothed body was later discovered by the roadside in Lagos, prompting widespread outrage and demands for justice.

Ominikoron had pleaded not guilty to all charges, but the court rejected his defense and convicted him on multiple counts, culminating in a death sentence by hanging.
