Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) affected by the recent Yelwata attacks staged a protest in Makurdi on Thursday, decrying severe hunger, neglect, and the alleged diversion of essential relief materials.
The demonstrators, mostly women and children, blocked the major road near the Makurdi International Market, leading to significant traffic congestion. They called on the government and humanitarian agencies to take urgent action.
The protesters claimed at least two individuals have died recently in the camp due to starvation and worsening living conditions.
Some accused camp officials of hoarding or diverting items meant for displaced persons, including food and mattresses reportedly donated by the Senior Pastor of Dunamis International Gospel Centre, Dr. Paul Enenche.
“There’s no food, our children are starving, we sleep on the floor, and mosquitoes are almost killing us,” said one female protester, holding a placard. “We are suffering, and people are dying.”
They urged the Benue State Government and relief agencies to investigate the alleged misconduct and ensure fair distribution of aid.
As of the time of filing this report, no official response had been issued by the state government.
