UNIMED Denies Fee Hike, Advocates Inclusion of Students in NELFUND

The University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo State, has refuted claims of a tuition hike for returning students, clarifying that only the fees for newly admitted students were slightly adjusted.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ebunoluwa Adejuyigbe, stated that the university has engaged with the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) to ensure that eligible indigent students are included in the loan scheme.

Speaking at a media briefing, Adejuyigbe dismissed reports of a 149 per cent increase in fees, describing them as misleading. She noted that some programmes still charge as low as ₦150,000.

“There are a lot of incorrect narratives circulating about UNIMED’s tuition. These distortions, often propagated by individuals posing as media sources, appear to be attempts to discredit a fast-growing institution,” she said.

“Let me make it clear that the university did not increase fees across the board. Only the tuition for fresh students was adjusted to maintain quality education amid current economic realities.”

The Vice Chancellor further emphasized that UNIMED maintains transparency in its operations, adding that all tuition details are publicly available on the university’s website.

“Our fees remain competitive compared to similar institutions and are significantly subsidised by the Ondo State Government,” she added.

Addressing the recent transfer of the Akure complex of the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital to the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Prof. Adejuyigbe assured that the development would not negatively impact UNIMED.

She explained that, under the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between both institutions, UNIMED students will continue to have unrestricted access to all facilities and lecturers at the Akure complex.

“The ceding of the Akure branch is intended to support FUTA in launching its medical science programmes, while UNIMED focuses on strengthening its main teaching hospital in Ondo,” she clarified.

“UNIMED remains committed to collaboration and partnership, both locally and internationally, as these are essential for any 21st-century university to thrive. We will continue to leverage available facilities and partnerships to provide world-class medical and health sciences education.”
