National Assembly moves to create additional local governments in Benue

A bill seeking to amend the 1999 Constitution to allow the creation of additional Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Benue State has passed Second Reading in the House of Representatives.

The bill, designated HB2527, was sponsored by Rep. David Ogewu (APC–Oju/Obi Federal Constituency). It was first read on October 14, 2025, and came up for second reading on Tuesday, October 28, where it received broad support after debate on its general principles.

Moving the motion, Ogewu said the amendment aims to strengthen grassroots governance and bring government closer to the people. He argued that Benue’s vast landmass and growing population justify the need for more local councils to ensure equitable development and efficient administration.

The motion was seconded by Rt. Hon. Chinedu Ogar (APC–Ezza South/Ikwo Federal Constituency), who described the proposal as a positive step toward deepening democracy and improving service delivery in rural communities.

Ogewu expressed optimism that once passed into law, the amendment would pave the way for the establishment of additional LGAs across Benue, particularly in his constituency.

He recalled that a similar initiative was attempted by former Governor George Akume in 2007, but did not materialize.

The bill has been referred to the House Committee on Constitutional Review for further legislative action.
