A suspected militia attack on Mbasa community in Utange Council Ward of Katsina-Ala Local Government Area of Benue State has left one person dead and several houses destroyed by fire.

Sources within the military said troops of Sector 1, working alongside operatives of the Benue State Civil Protection Guards, were alerted to the incident at about 8:30 a.m. on June 4 and immediately moved to the area following a distress call.

However, by the time security personnel arrived at the community, the attackers had reportedly escaped.

Findings from an initial assessment indicated that one resident lost his life during the assault, while a number of homes were razed by the assailants.

Security operatives also recovered two spent 7.62mm special ammunition cartridges from the scene, suggesting that the attackers used firearms during the operation.

The victim’s remains were later taken away by relatives for burial in line with local traditions.

Military authorities said efforts were underway to identify and apprehend those behind the attack. They added that security had been strengthened around the community to forestall further attacks and restore confidence among residents.
