Controversy, reactions trail demolition of Oladam’s Place in Makurdi

Controversy has continued to trail the demolition of Oladam’s Place, a popular bar and restaurant in GRA Makurdi, just 48 hours after the state government pulled down the structure.

IDOMA VOICE recalls that Governor Hycent Alia, who was physically on the ground, ordered a total demolition of the business premises after the management allegedly trimmed a government tree within the compound.

Eyewitnesses said bulldozers moved in before the management could remove its belongings, sparking outrage and raising questions over the lack of prior notice or any form of warning.

Hon. Prince Onuh, CEO of Oladam’s Place and former chairman of Ogbadibo Local Government Area, condemned the demolition, insisting that the establishment had only trimmed a few branches and had not harmed any government property.

“The governor couldn’t even wait for us to remove our belongings before bulldozers arrived,” Onuh lamented. “This place has provided employment for many, including some of the governor’s Tiv kinsmen. Actions like this discourage investors and send the wrong message to people wanting to come back home and contribute to the state’s development.”

Public reactions have mirrored Onuh’s frustration. Residents expressed anger over what they described as “vindictive” and politically motivated actions.

Ajene Mary, a resident of High Level, Makurdi, said, “We have been encouraged to invest and create jobs in Benue, but now we see our businesses can be destroyed at a moment’s notice. It seems some people in power want to clip the wings of anyone not in their camp. This is not how a government should treat its citizens.”

The Benue South League of Comrades has also announced plans to challenge Governor Alia in court over the demolition. Comrade Joe Okpe said, “It is politics taken too far, and the group will take the necessary steps to get justice.”

Observers have further noted that Onuh, who is eyeing the Benue South Senate seat under the APC platform and is aligned with the camp of former SGF George Akume, may have been specifically targeted.
