Benue: Catholic Diocese of Gboko suspends Priest over prolonged absence from pastoral duties
The Catholic Diocese of Gboko has suspended Rev. Fr. David Golodzo from active ministry, citing what it termed an extended, unauthorized absence from his pastoral duties.
A document issued on the official letterhead of the Diocese and dated September 4, 2025, reveals that the action was approved by the Bishop of Gboko, Most Rev. William Avenya.
The letter, addressed directly to Rev. Fr. Golodzo, states that he was posted to St. Edward Parish, Uga, as an Associate Priest but allegedly failed to remain at his designated station for long stretches without securing permission from ecclesiastical authorities.
Bishop Avenya, referencing relevant sections of the Code of Canon Law, emphasized that Catholic clerics take a vow of obedience and are expected to reside within their assigned jurisdiction unless formally excused.
According to the Diocese, multiple attempts to compel the priest to resume his duties did not yield results.
The bishop explained that abandoning one’s assignment for a prolonged period is a serious canonical offence that attracts disciplinary measures.
As a result, the Diocese placed Rev. Fr. Golodzo under suspension, effectively restricting him from celebrating Mass publicly, administering sacraments, or joining in any public liturgical ceremonies.
Nonetheless, the communication noted that he may privately offer Holy Mass and provide spiritual assistance only in cases involving danger of death, consistent with canonical provisions.
The suspension takes immediate effect from the time it is delivered and will continue until the priest complies with directives and discontinues what the Diocese described as contumacy.
The letter was signed by Bishop William Avenya and the Diocesan Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Marcellinus Wende, with a copy forwarded to the Secretary General of the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria for documentation.
As at press time, Rev. Fr. David Golodzo had not issued any public statement regarding the disciplinary action.
