2027: Peter Obi rejects VP slot, insists on running as presidential candidate

Former Labour Party presidential candidate and leading figure in the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Peter Obi, has declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election, firmly ruling out any consideration for a vice-presidential role.

Obi made this known while addressing supporters during a campaign rally for ADC candidates in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections, held at the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC).

Speaking to party members and residents, Obi said his political engagement ahead of 2027 is focused squarely on the top office, stressing that he is not part of any arrangement that positions him as a subordinate in the party’s future plans.

According to him, the outcome of the AMAC election is directly linked to his broader political ambition, urging party faithful to mobilise massive support for the ADC candidate.

“The coming election, support us in AMAC; it will help me. Your support in AMAC is critical to our journey. I am involved and contesting the coming election as number one, not number two. When I come back, you will see. I assure you,” Obi said.

He explained that success at the grassroots level, particularly in the FCT, would strengthen his political base ahead of the 2027 general elections, emphasizing that his participation is as a principal contender, not a running mate.

Meanwhile, supporters of Obi, especially members of the Obidient Movement, have intensified calls on the ADC leadership to adopt him as the party’s sole presidential flagbearer for 2027.

The ADC, however, is also home to other prominent politicians with presidential ambitions, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, setting the stage for a potentially competitive primary contest.
