FCT police rescue two abandoned babies in Kurudu, Gwagwalada

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has rescued two abandoned babies in separate incidents in Kurudu and Gwagwalada

areas of the nation’s capital..

The command’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Josephine Adeh, disclosed this in a statement on Friday.

Baby rescued in Kurudu

Adeh said a Kurudu resident, Mr Innocent, reported the first incident at the Kurudu Police Station on Wednesday, September 2, 2026.

Innocent heard a baby crying around Obodo Street, Kurudu. He went to investigate and found a baby boy wrapped in cloth inside a carton box.

Police officers from the Kurudu Division and the Juveniles and Women Care (JWC) Department responded to the report. They rescued the child and took him to a nearby hospital for medical assessment.

The baby “is currently in a stable condition, while efforts are being intensified to unravel the circumstances surrounding the abandonment.”

Adeh said the command completed the necessary documentation and “handed over the baby to the Social Welfare Department for further care.”

Second baby found in Gwagwalada

The second incident occurred in Gwagwalada on the same day.

Adeh said a resident, Mr Ibrahim, heard a baby crying outside his gate. He went outside and found a baby girl who appeared to have been abandoned on the premises.

Ibrahim and other community members rescued the child. They then reported the incident at the Gwagwalada Police Station.

The police took the baby girl to the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital for medical examination.

“The baby girl was promptly taken to the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital by the JWC Department of the division for medical examination and is currently receiving care before being handed over to the Social Welfare Department for further care, while efforts are being intensified to unravel the circumstances surrounding the abandonment.

“The FCT Police Command appreciates the prompt intervention of Mr Innocent, Mr Ibrahim and other concerned members of the community in rescuing the children and bringing the incidents to the attention of the police,” the statement added.

The police urged anyone with information that could help identify the babies’ mothers to report to the nearest police station.
