Many residents of Otukpo LGA of Benue State have been rendered homeless after a devastating windstorm swept through the ancient town on Friday night.

IDOMA VOICE gathered that over 100 houses were badly damaged, with the worst-affected areas being Igbanomaje, Ipu Road and Otia.

According to residents, the windstorm, accompanied by heavy rainfall, struck suddenly, leaving destruction in its wake.

Speaking with IDOMA VOICE, a resident of Igbanomaje, David Inalegwu, said:
“Many residents were left homeless in the disaster. Our people have nowhere to sleep. We urgently need assistance from the government and relief agencies.

“We woke up to find our homes destroyed and our families exposed to the rain. We are begging for help from NEMA, SEMA, and anyone who can assist. Many people don’t have where to sleep at the moment.

Another victim around Upu Road, described the harrowing night: “The windstorm came without warning. Our roofs were blown away, and most of our belongings are lost. We don’t know what to do next.”

A woman from Otia, who also lost her home, broke down in tears while holding her children and said: “This disaster has left families scared and exposed. Many of us are sleeping under trees and in open spaces. The government must come to our aid immediately.”

Residents are calling on the government and emergency agencies to provide immediate relief, as families scramble for temporary shelter and support to recover from the disaster.
