El-Rufai’s release humane but must be backed by court order — Adeyanju
Human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju has reacted to the temporary release of former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai from custody to attend his mother’s burial.
Adeyanju described the decision as humane and commendable, noting that it reflects compassion in sensitive personal circumstances.
He, however, emphasized that the release should be supported by a valid court order, since El-Rufai was remanded by a court prior to his detention.
According to him, granting such relief strikes a balance between the demands of justice and respect for human dignity, and should not be mistaken as an attempt to evade accountability.
Nasir El-Rufai was earlier remanded in custody following his arrest by the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) over alleged corruption-related offences, which are still under investigation.
