Commanding officer, six soldiers killed after repelling Boko Haram attack in Borno
The Nigerian military has confirmed the death of a commanding officer and six soldiers attached to the Joint Task Force (North East) Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) following a terrorist attack in Monguno, Borno State.
The incident occurred late on April 12, 2026, when troops under Sector 3 were ambushed by insurgents at a position identified as Charlie 13.
According to a statement by Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, the troops responded swiftly, engaging the attackers in an intense firefight that forced them to withdraw, while the soldiers retained full control of the area.
Despite the successful defence, tragedy followed shortly after. The commanding officer, who had advanced to the frontline to evaluate the situation, was killed when his vehicle struck an improvised explosive device (IED).
“Regrettably, the Commanding Officer, while courageously proceeding to the troops’ location to personally assess the situation, encountered an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) which severely affected his vehicle, leading to his death alongside six other gallant personnel,” the statement said.
The military noted that the officer’s decision to move toward his troops, even after the threat had been subdued, exemplified exceptional leadership and bravery.
“His willingness to move towards the troops in the heat of the battle, despite the prevailing danger, stands as a profound testament to his valour, sense of duty, and unwavering commitment to the welfare and operational effectiveness of his men.
“Operation HADIN KAI deeply mourns the loss of this exceptional officer and the other brave personnel who paid the supreme price in service to the nation.
“Their sacrifice will forever remain etched in the memory of the Armed Forces and the grateful nation they served,” the statement added.
The military assured that troops remain firmly in control of the area despite the attack.
