2027: Aisha Yesufu denies withdrawing from FCT senatorial race
Human rights activist Aisha Yesufu has dismissed reports claiming she withdrew from the race for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Senatorial seat under the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a lengthy statement shared on her verified X account, Yesufu clarified that she remained in the contest until the end and chose not to challenge the outcome in court because, according to her, the process was never genuinely allowed to take place.
She explained that her decision to enter politics was driven by a desire to contribute directly to the change she advocates, stressing that meaningful transformation requires active participation rather than criticism from the sidelines.
“As the dust settles on the NDC primaries, I want to set the record straight: I did not quit, and I did not drop out of the race,” she stated.
“Yes, I understood what I was getting into. I knew our political system has not yet evolved to a point where values-based candidates can easily emerge through merit in a structure designed to resist them.
“However, I made a commitment from the start that I would not compromise my values. I would stand for what is right. I did not leave advocacybehind to enter politics; instead, I brought advocacy into politics.
“I ran a campaign I am genuinely proud of. Our grassroots mobilization was strong, and we earned credibility among the people in a way that cannot be manufactured behind closed doors,” she added.
