Benue NDC primaries: Group condemns attack on Williams Enenche
The Ogbadibo Youth Democratic Frontiers (OYDF) has condemned the alleged attack on Hon. Williams Enenche during the recent NDC primaries, describing the incident as unacceptable and a threat to democratic participation.
In a statement issued on Monday by its Coordinator, James Agbo Daniel, the group expressed concern over reports linking the altercation to the outcome of the primaries and called on security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation to establish the facts and bring anyone found culpable to justice.
The youth group also frowned at attempts by some individuals to drag the name of renowned cleric, Dr Paul Enenche, into partisan politics through his younger brother, Hon. Williams Enenche.
According to the group, Dr Enenche has built a reputation as a respected preacher whose influence cuts across political, ethnic and religious divides and should not be dragged into political disputes.
“We strongly condemn the reported attack on Hon. Williams Enenche and any form of violence associated with political activities. Democracy thrives on the free expression of the will of the people, not intimidation, harassment or physical attacks,” the statement said.
The group noted that while disagreements are common in political contests, such disputes must be resolved through lawful and democratic means rather than violence.
OYDF further urged political actors to refrain from making inflammatory statements capable of heightening tensions ahead of the 2027 elections.
“It is unfortunate that the name of Dr Paul Enenche is being dragged into political controversies. Dr Enenche is a respected religious leader whose contributions to nation-building and spiritual development are well known. Political actors should leave him out of partisan conflicts,” the group added.
The organisation called on the Nigeria Police Force and other relevant security agencies to investigate the circumstances surrounding the alleged assault and allegations emerging from the primaries.
It also urged stakeholders in the NDC and other political parties to uphold transparency, fairness and internal democracy in order to strengthen public confidence in the electoral process.
The group maintained that Ogbadibo youths would continue to support peaceful political engagement and resist any attempt to subvert the will of the people through violence or intimidation.
“We call for a full investigation into the incident and urge all parties involved to allow due process to take its course. Violence has no place in our democracy,” the statement added.
