A Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced four terrorists to death by hanging for their involvement in the June 5, 2022 attack on Saint Francis Catholic Church, Owo, in Ondo State.

Justice Emeka Nwite delivered the judgment on Wednesday, finding the defendants guilty on all nine counts brought against them.

The convicts are Idris Abdulmalik Omeiza, 25; Al Qasim Idris, 20; Jamiu Abdulmalik, 26; and Abdulhaleem Idris, 25. The court ordered that they be hanged until dead.

The attack on Saint Francis Catholic Church claimed the lives of 43 worshippers and left several others injured, sparking nationwide outrage.

Meanwhile, a fifth defendant, Momoh Otuho Abubakar, 47, was discharged and acquitted by the court after being cleared of the charges against him.

Justice Nwite held that the prosecution had successfully proved its case against the four convicted terrorists beyond reasonable doubt, leading to their conviction and sentencing.
