2027: ‘The time has come for an Idoma Governor’ — Benue Equity Alliance backs Matthew Ochigbo
A socio-political group, the Benue Equity Alliance Movement, has insisted that the Idoma people deserve the opportunity to produce the governor of Benue State in 2027, arguing that the ethnic group has been excluded from the state’s highest political office since its creation 51 years ago.
The group made the demand in a statement issued on Friday, where it described the absence of an Idoma governor since the creation of Benue State in 1976 as a major injustice that must be addressed in the interest of equity, fairness and inclusive governance.
According to the group, the Idoma people have made significant contributions to the development, peace and unity of the state and therefore deserve the chance to lead.
The group noted that the 2027 governorship election presents an opportunity for Benue people to correct what it described as a long-standing political imbalance by supporting the emergence of an Idoma governor.
“The absence of an Idoma governor is not merely a political issue but a matter of justice, representation and inclusion,” the group stated.
It argued that every ethnic group in the state should have a sense of belonging and participation in governance, stressing that equitable power sharing would strengthen unity and deepen democratic values.
The Benue Equity Alliance Movement also announced its support for the governorship ambition of the National Democratic Party (NDP) candidate, Hon. Matthew Ochigbo, describing him as a leader with the capacity, experience and vision to transform the state.
The group said Ochigbo’s track record in public service, philanthropy and community development distinguished him as a credible candidate capable of promoting inclusive governance and sustainable development.
According to the group, an Ochigbo administration would provide an opportunity to bridge existing divisions, foster unity among the diverse ethnic groups in the state and deliver the dividends of democracy to the people.
It therefore called on Benue residents, political stakeholders and supporters of equity and justice to rally behind the campaign for the emergence of an Idoma governor in 2027.
The group expressed optimism that the governorship election would provide a platform for addressing historical grievances and promoting a more inclusive political system in the state.
