Atiku mourns veteran actor Kola Oyewo, calls him theatre legend
Presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has expressed grief over the death of veteran actor Kola Oyewo. He described him as a legendary thespian with unforgettable contributions to African theatre.
The actor died on Friday. His son, Adetoyese Oyewo, announced the death.
Reacting to the development, Atiku shared a statement on his X handle on Saturday. In it, he said he was deeply saddened by the news.
“I am deeply saddened by the passing of Dr. Kola Oyewo, a legendary thespian and scholar of African drama,” he said.
He also noted Oyewo’s iconic role as King Lapite in the classic film Saworoide. According to him, the role cemented the actor’s place in African theatre history.
“His iconic role as King Lapite in the timeless Saworoide immortalised his immense talent and teachings,” Atiku stated.
Furthermore, he said the theatre industry has lost a great figure. He added that lovers of African storytelling worldwide will miss him greatly.
“A great void has been left in Theatre Arts. He will be sorely missed by lovers of African stories worldwide,” he said.
Finally, Atiku extended condolences to the late actor’s family, friends, and fans. He described him as an exceptional dramatist and teacher of social conscience.
“I join his family and fans in mourning this exceptional dramatist and teacher of social conscience. May his soul rest in peace,” he added.
