EFCC explains why it did not freeze Ekiti govt account

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has explained why it did not freeze the Ekiti State Government’s account during the state’s governorship election, saying it had no incriminating information against the state.

The commission’s Director of Public Affairs, Wilson Uwujaren, made the clarification on Thursday during an interview on Arise Television’s Morning Show.

Uwujaren’s remarks followed the EFCC’s decision to freeze the Osun State Government’s account ahead of the state’s governorship election.

According to him, the commission’s action against Osun was based on available intelligence and should not be interpreted as politically motivated.

He noted that Osun was not the first state to have its account restricted by the anti-graft agency, recalling that a similar action was taken against the Edo State Government.

Uwujaren said the commission intervened in Edo after detecting suspicious movements of funds into certain accounts, adding that the operation helped preserve about ₦12 billion.

“We didn’t have any reason to intervene in Ekiti the way we are intervening now in Osun. You don’t have access to information as we have.

“We are not targeting anybody but simply doing our job,” he said.
