In many local government areas across Nigeria, residents often complain about the absence of visible governance and the slow pace of development.

In Ado Local Government Area of Benue State, however, discussions are increasingly centred on projects, community engagement and efforts aimed at improving the lives of ordinary people.

Since assuming office as Chairman of Ado Local Government Council in October 2024, Engr. Sunny Oche has pursued an agenda focused on infrastructure renewal, grassroots development, youth engagement and improved service delivery. While challenges remain, many residents say the council’s activities have brought renewed attention to the needs of communities across the local government area.

One of the key areas of focus under the current administration has been infrastructure development.

Across many communities in Ado, access roads remain critical to economic activities, especially for farmers and traders who depend on transportation networks to move goods and services.

Among the projects championed by the administration is the ongoing Igumale–Agila Road project, valued at about N22 billion.

According to Oche, the project faced opposition and petitions at its inception. Despite the controversy, construction has continued, with an initial N8 billion released and an additional N1 billion recently paid to the contractor to sustain work on the project.

The chairman also secured approval for a five-kilometre road network covering major streets within Ado Local Government Area.

Although the project suffered setbacks following the withholding of counterpart funding, the administration insists it remains committed to improving road infrastructure across the council area.

A recurring theme in assessments of Engr. Oche’s administration is his emphasis on grassroots engagement. Through interactions with traditional rulers, community leaders, youth groups and women associations, the administration has sought to ensure that governance remains connected to the people.

This approach has enabled the council to better understand local challenges and identify priority areas requiring intervention.

For many residents, regular engagement between government officials and communities has helped build trust and improve participation in local governance.

Recognising the importance of human capital development, the administration has also placed attention on youth and women empowerment initiatives.

In a local government blessed with a vibrant and energetic population, creating opportunities for young people remains crucial to sustainable development. Programmes designed to support skills acquisition, entrepreneurship and economic participation are increasingly viewed as important tools for reducing unemployment and promoting self-reliance.

Women’s inclusion in development efforts has equally remained a significant aspect of the council’s agenda.

Like many rural communities across the country, Ado has faced security concerns that require constant attention. The council’s collaboration with traditional institutions, community stakeholders and security agencies has been identified as an important component of efforts to maintain peace and stability.

The administration has also invested in solar-powered street lighting around the local government secretariat and other strategic locations. According to council officials, many of these areas had previously served as hideouts for criminal elements due to poor lighting.

Residents believe that development can only thrive in an atmosphere of security, making sustained investment in peacebuilding and community cooperation essential.

Agriculture remains the backbone of the local economy in Ado. Consequently, policies and programmes that support farmers and rural communities are often regarded as critical indicators of performance.

Stakeholders have continued to advocate for investments that improve access to markets, boost agricultural productivity and create opportunities for rural dwellers.

Beyond agriculture, the administration has sought to strengthen primary healthcare delivery. Following concerns that drugs and vaccines supplied by UNICEF and other government and non-governmental agencies were being lost due to poor storage facilities, the council provided more than 11 solar-powered refrigerators to Primary Healthcare Centres across the local government.

The administration has also restored electricity to the local government secretariat after decades of inactivity and undertaken the renovation of key public facilities, including the Governor’s Lodge.

In addition, reforms in revenue administration have introduced real-time electronic collection and lodgement systems aimed at improving transparency, accountability and efficiency in local government operations.

The administration’s focus on community development has contributed to discussions about how local governments can play a more active role in supporting grassroots economic growth.

While supporters of the administration point to visible achievements in infrastructure, healthcare, public utilities and governance reforms, many residents also believe there is room for greater progress in areas such as infrastructure expansion, employment creation and social services.

Nonetheless, the conversation surrounding Engr. Sunny Oche’s leadership reflects a broader expectation among the people of Ado for responsive governance and sustainable development.

As the local government continues its development journey, the success of the administration will ultimately be measured by its ability to translate policies and promises into lasting improvements in the lives of the people.

For now, Ado remains under the spotlight, with residents closely watching the unfolding impact of Engr. Sunny Oche’s development agenda and its potential to shape the future of the local government area.
