In the wake of speculations surrounding the replacement of the ousted National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Abdullahi Adamu, the National Vice Chairman for North-West, Mallam Salihu Lukman, has issued a warning against appointing former Governor of Kano State, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, to the position. Lukman expressed concerns that such a move could upset the zoning arrangement of the party.

Recent rumors have suggested that President Bola Tinubu might have considered Ganduje as the next chairman of the ruling party, following the departure of Senator Adamu and former National Secretary, Senator Iyiola Omisore.

In a statement titled ‘APC: Way Forward,’ Lukman expressed his reservations about the potential appointment of Dr. Ganduje, citing it as an act of insensitivity and disregard for the party’s members. He stressed that such a decision would disrupt the zoning configuration that influenced the current leadership of the National Assembly, particularly in the North West and North Central regions.

The National Vice Chairman urged caution and asserted that the position of National Chairman must be retained in the North Central region. He called on the APC governors to avoid making insensitive and unjust decisions that could negatively impact the party.

Lukman further emphasized the importance of restoring the APC to its founding vision of progressive politics, which should be based on inclusion and justice. He called on President Tinubu to intervene and guide the process of selecting new party leadership to ensure a return to constitutional order and uphold the party’s progressive ideals.

As the APC navigates this crucial leadership transition, Lukman stressed the need for all leaders to prioritize the party’s unity and the preservation of its progressive principles. He cautioned against the emergence of leaders who may not uphold the party’s core values and urged for a transparent and inclusive process in the selection of new leadership.

The resignation of Senator Adamu and Senator Omisore from their respective positions has set in motion discussions and speculations about the party’s future direction. Lukman’s call for a principled and thoughtful approach in the selection process seeks to safeguard the APC’s founding vision and maintain its status as a progressive political force in Nigeria.
