Benue guber 2027: PDP, ADC plot Gov Alia’s removal

Political tension is mounting in Benue State as opposition parties, notably the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC), reportedly join forces to unseat Governor Alia ahead of the 2027 elections.

Sources say the coalition is actively scouting for a stronger candidate, particularly from Benue South (Zone C), where ADC’s David Mark serves as the National Interim Chairman, to consolidate support in the senatorial district.

Opposition insiders allege that Governor Alia has ignored widespread public outcry and multiple petitions regarding governance concerns. Among the controversial decisions cited is the recent appointment of a Commissioner for Justice, despite petitions from civil society groups and constituents opposing the individual’s selection.

Critics argue that the appointment disregards calls for transparency and fairness in state governance.

“Despite repeated petitions and concerns from residents and stakeholders, the governor went ahead with the appointment. This is a clear example of a government that prioritizes personal loyalties over the welfare of the people,” a PDP strategist, speaking on condition of anonymity, said.

The opposition coalition accuses Governor Alia of turning the state’s governance into what they describe as a “Vandekiya affair,” where key political appointments and contracts are disproportionately awarded to individuals from his local government. Development initiatives, they claim, have largely bypassed Benue South (Zone C), leaving the area marginalized and fueling growing discontent among residents.

“Governor Alia has concentrated power and resources in his home area, while other parts of the state continue to lag in critical infrastructure and social services,” said a senior ADC official familiar with the coalition talks.

The PDP–ADC alliance is said to be holding secret meetings and strategy sessions to identify a strong, credible candidate capable of challenging Governor Alia in 2027. Analysts note that the coalition is particularly keen on presenting a candidate from Benue South, a move aimed at winning back the confidence of residents who feel neglected by the current administration.

Despite the growing opposition, the Benue State APC has dismissed the coalition’s efforts as “political theater.” Agbo Edoka, a senior APC chieftain, described the opposition as “jokers, expired politicians with empty threats” and reaffirmed that the administration remains focused on governance and development projects.

“They are just jokers, expired politicians with empty threats,” Edoka said. “Our government is not distracted by their antics. We are committed to delivering results for the people of Benue State. Political speculations will not undermine Governor Alia’s mandate or our developmental agenda.”

Political analysts warn that the emergence of a PDP–ADC alliance, coupled with a candidate from Zone C, could intensify political rivalry in the state ahead of 2027. While the opposition seeks to capitalize on public discontent and perceived favoritism in appointments, the government insists that its record of development and governance will ultimately determine voter confidence.
