Benue killings: Ortom cancels 64th birthday celebrations
Former Governor of Benue State, Chief Samuel Ortom, has called off all planned celebrations for his 64th birthday in a show of solidarity with victims of the ongoing violent attacks plaguing the state.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by his media aide, Terver Akase, Ortom explained that his decision was driven by the tragic wave of violence currently sweeping through several local government areas in Benue.
“Given the intensified invasion, brutal attacks, and senseless killings of innocent Benue citizens by Fulani terrorists, I have chosen to forgo any form of celebration,” Ortom stated.
Instead of marking the milestone with festivities, the former governor said he would stand in mourning with the affected families, offering his heartfelt condolences and acknowledging the immense grief caused by the crisis.
Despite the somber tone, Ortom expressed gratitude for the gift of life, saying, “I thank God Almighty for His mercy, good health, and blessings over the past 64 years. I remain committed to serving God and humanity in the years ahead.”
He also extended appreciation to the people of Benue and Nigerians at large for their continued support and prayers.
Urging collective action, Ortom called on citizens to pray fervently for the victims, and seek divine intervention for peace in the state and the country at large. He specifically appealed for prayers for national and state leaders, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia, and Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume.
“May God grant them the wisdom and strength to address the serious security challenges facing our nation,” Ortom concluded.
