Benue unveils plan to build new civil airport, export zone on Makurdi–Gboko road
The Benue State Government says it will construct a modern civil airport complete with international, domestic, and cargo terminals alongside a 100-hectare Export/Import Processing Zone on the Makurdi–Gboko Road.
Commissioner for Lands and Survey, Rev. Dr. Frederick Ikyaan, announced the plan on Friday at a meeting with traditional rulers from Guma, Gboko, Gwer, and Tarka LGAs. He said the airport site will sit just beyond Agasha junction, while the processing zone will occupy land across the road.
Ikyaan noted that surveying is complete and Governor Hyacinth Alia has ordered immediate commencement of work. He stressed that consultations with local chiefs are vital for a smooth rollout.
Traditional leaders, including Ter Gwer Chief Dominic Akpe and Ter Gboko Chief Gabriel Shosom, welcomed the initiative but urged fair compensation for communities that will lose land. They praised Governor Alia for what they called a transformative project and pledged cooperation.
Top government officials, among them the Governor’s Special Adviser on Lands, Surv. Matthias Antor, and BENGIS Director-General Prof. Daniel Amine, were also in attendance.
Officials expect the airport and processing zone to enhance air travel, expand agricultural exports, and position Benue as a key investment and trade hub.
