BREAKING: 92-year-old Paul Biya re-Elected, extends 43-year rule in Cameroon
Cameroon’s long-time leader, President Paul Biya, has secured another seven-year mandate at the age of 92, prolonging his leadership that has spanned over four decades.
On Monday, the country’s Constitutional Council confirmed Biya’s victory in the October 12 presidential election, announcing that he garnered 53.66% of the total votes. His main opponent, Issa Tchiroma, followed with 35.19%.
It’s worth recalling that Tchiroma had previously proclaimed himself the legitimate winner of the disputed poll.
With this latest win, Biya who has been in power since 1982 further cements his place among the world’s longest-serving heads of state, continuing to lead despite his advanced age and increasing public pressure for a political transition.
The declaration has stirred divided opinions nationwide, as his supporters hail the result as a victory for stability, while critics condemn it as another setback for democracy and political renewal in Cameroon.
