High Court in Lokoja, Kogi State, has issued a restraining order against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to prevent any infringement on the fundamental human rights of former Governor Yahaya Bello.

The judgment, delivered by Hon. Justice I.A Jamil at High Court 4, came after two hours of deliberation in suit no HCL/68/M/2020. The court specifically prohibited the EFCC from carrying out actions such as arresting, detaining, or prosecuting Bello unless authorized by the court. This definitive order follows an earlier interim injunction.

The case was initiated by Bello, who sought to uphold his fundamental rights against the EFCC. Additionally, the court restrained the respondents from continuing any form of persecution against the applicant. Notably, the court dismissed the EFCC’s challenge regarding jurisdiction.

The legal representatives of both parties expressed their respective views on the judgment. The Applicant’s Counsel, SA Abbas and MS Yusuf, hailed the judgment as a landmark decision. Similarly, the Defendant Counsel, T.U Odima and Patrick O. Jibril, endorsed the judgment, commending its thoroughness.
