Former Senate President David Mark has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), ending a decades-long affiliation with the party he helped establish and shape.

Mark’s departure was confirmed in a resignation letter dated June 27, addressed to the PDP leadership in Otukpo Ward 1, Benue State. He cited deepening internal divisions and a lingering leadership crisis as key reasons for his decision to leave.

“The irreconcilable differences in the PDP have subjected the party to public ridicule and reduced it to a shadow of its former self,” he wrote.

The development comes shortly after Mark was appointed as interim national chairman of the coalition-backed African Democratic Congress (ADC), signaling a major shift in Nigeria’s evolving political alignment ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Reflecting on his years in the PDP, Mark highlighted his unwavering loyalty and efforts to rebuild the party following its defeat in the 2015 presidential election.

“Over the years, I have remained firm and deeply committed to the ideals of the PDP. Even when nearly all stakeholders departed the party after 2015, I pledged to remain the last man standing,” he stated.

“I worked tirelessly to reconcile and reposition the party, which helped restore its national relevance.”

However, he lamented that the PDP has failed to overcome its internal challenges, leading to persistent divisions and declining credibility.

“Recent events marked by deepening divisions, persistent leadership crisis, and irreconcilable differences have weakened the PDP beyond recognition,” Mark wrote.

He noted that the decision to leave was made after wide consultations with his family, political allies, and associates. Declaring his next move, Mark said he would now be part of the National Coalition of Political Opposition Movement in Nigeria, aimed at rescuing the nation and safeguarding democracy.

His resignation marks a significant loss for the PDP, given his status as a founding figure and influential statesman within the party.
