BREAKING: Manchester City defeat Tottenham 0-1 to win 2021 Carabao cup

Manchester City have won the Carabao Cup for the fourth time in a row after Aymeric Laporte’s 82nd-minute header saw off Tottenham Hotspur’s spirited resistance.

Spurs may feel hard done by that Laporte was on the field to score the winner, after the French centre-back escaped a first-half booking for a foul on Lucas Moura, before receiving a yellow card for a similar challenge on the Brazilian just before half-time.

Pep Guardiola’s side were unfortunate not to be in the lead by that stage, having dominated the first 45 minutes. Toby Alderweireld deflected Phil Foden’s close-range shot onto the post, while Eric Dier blocked Raheem Sterling’s shot.

The second half was a much tighter affair, watched by 8,000 socially distanced fans at Wembley, with 2,000 tickets allocated to fans on either side. It was the sky-blue half left celebrating at the final whistle after Laporte broke the deadlock, heading home Kevin De Bruyne’s free kick after Serge Aurier had fouled Sterling.
