Supreme Court reserves judgment in Sokoto governorship appeal

The Supreme Court has held off on delivering a verdict in the appeal challenging the election of Ahmad Aliyu from the All Progressives Congress (APC) as Sokoto State Governor.

Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, heading a five-member panel at the apex court, issued this decision on Tuesday, January 17, 2023, following the final submissions from the parties’ attorneys.

Justice Kekere-Ekun declared that the judgment has been reserved, and notification will be given to the concerned parties once it is prepared for delivery.

The appeal was initiated by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Saidu Umar, from the last Sokoto State governorship election. The appellants aim to overturn the Court of Appeal’s November 23, 2023, decision, which had overturned the prior judgment of the election tribunal that removed Governor Aliyu from office.
