Businessman faces trial for alleged N9.8 million tyre fraud

A 45-year-old businessman, Philip David, appeared before the Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, facing allegations of a N9.8 million car tyre fraud.

David, who resides in Barnawa, Kaduna, is charged with conspiracy, theft, and fraud.

Prosecutor Insp. Chidi Leo informed the court that the alleged offenses occurred in September 2023 on Taiwo Road, along Ahmadu Bello Way in Kaduna.

According to Leo, the defendant accepted N9.8 million from Vincent and Sons Investment Limited to supply various sizes of car tyres but failed to deliver them over the course of a year and did not refund the money.

The prosecutor stated that these actions violate Sections 285, 217, and 241 of the Kaduna State Penal Code, 2017.

David pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.

Chief Magistrate Ibrahim Emmanuel granted him bail set at N1 million, requiring two sureties in the same amount.

Emmanuel ordered that the sureties must reside within the jurisdiction of the court and must be gainfully employed with evidence of tax payment to the Kaduna State Government.

The case has been adjourned until October 23 for further hearing.
