‘Even J.S. Tarka never sang ‘no Tarka, no Benue’ – SGF Akume
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator Dr. George Akume, has reminded Nigerians of the selfless leadership and historical contributions of late Tiv leader, J.S. Tarka, during the Tiv Day Celebration held in Gboko on Saturday, December 13th, 2025.
Speaking at the event, Akume said, “Even J.S. Tarka, who fought for the creation of States, never sang ‘No Tarka, No Benue.’”
He noted that Tarka’s legacy serves as a model for selfless leadership and prioritizing the collective good over personal or political gain.
The SGF emphasized that Tarka’s dedication helped shape the foundation of modern Benue State and contributed to national unity.
He urged political leaders and citizens to emulate Tarka’s commitment to peace, responsible governance, and community development, rather than using divisive rhetoric for personal advantage.
Akume also stated the importance of Tiv culture and heritage, which were being celebrated during the annual Tiv Day.
He commended the Tiv people for their resilience, cultural pride, and enduring contributions to Nigeria’s development, while calling on the younger generation to uphold these values.
“As we celebrate Tiv Day, let us remember our history and the leaders who built the foundation of Benue State with courage, vision, and unity.
We must continue to work together for the progress of our communities and the nation,” Akume said.
The SGF’s remarks formed part of a series of speeches during the event that underscored peace, unity, and good governance, themes echoed by other dignitaries including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who was represented by Akume.
The Tiv Day Celebration, themed “The Rebirth of the Tiv Nation,” also featured prayers, cultural displays, and tributes to Tiv leaders, highlighting the rich heritage of the Tiv people and their contributions to Nigeria’s social and political development.
