Finidi George to coach Super Eagles against Ghana, Mali

The Super Eagles of Nigeria will debut a new coach, former Ajax star Finidi George, in their upcoming friendly matches against the Black Stars of Ghana and the Eagles of Mali later this month.

Set to play their West African rivals on March 22 and March 26 respectively in Morocco, Nigeria is currently without a permanent manager following the departure of former coach Jose Peseiro after the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Although the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) continues its search for a permanent replacement, Finidi George is expected to lead the team for the two friendlies. The former Ajax star, who previously served as one of Peseiro’s assistants at the AFCON, will temporarily manage the team alongside Enyimba GK Ojo Olorunleke.

While Finidi remains a leading candidate for the permanent role, the NFF has received numerous applications for the position, including from former internationals such as Emmanuel Amunike, Sunday Oliseh, and Samson Siasia. However, speculation suggests that the decision may come down to a choice between Amunike and former Cameroon coach Antonio Conceicao.
