Nigeria’s Women’s Professional Football League champions, Delta Queens, experienced a setback as they were defeated 1-0 by Ghana’s Ampem Darkoa in the final match of the WAFU Championship held at Benin City’s Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium on Thursday.

Despite dominating the proceedings in the first half, Delta Queens suffered a setback as they conceded a goal in the 43rd minute of play.

Ophelia Amponsah secured the crucial goal, capitalizing on a counter-attack maneuver.

In the second half, Delta Queens struggled to find the equalizing goal, despite mounting substantial pressure on their opponents’ goal area.

Regrettably, the defeat also meant that the hosts missed the opportunity to secure a place in the CAF Women’s Champions League.

This outcome marked the first instance that Nigeria has not participated in the CAF Women’s Champions League since its inception three years ago. In the inaugural edition, Rivers Angels represented the country, while Bayelsa Queens clinched a third-place finish in the most recent edition.
