Benue State Governor has strongly condemned the recent terrorist attacks on Benue communities and the shooting of Reverend Father Solomon Atongu along the Makurdi–Naka road.

In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Sir Tersoo Kula, the Governor expressed deep outrage and sorrow over what he described as a “dastardly incident.” He also condemned the brutal attacks on Tse-Orbiam and Ahume communities in Gwer-West Local Government Area, where scores are feared dead.

Kula revealed that the attacks occurred just meters from a military checkpoint, highlighting the growing insecurity and unchecked violence plaguing the deteriorating Makurdi–Naka road.

The Governor thanked God for sparing the life of Fr. Atongu, who was critically injured but is now in stable condition. He extended solidarity to the Catholic community, particularly the Bishop and faithful of the Makurdi Diocese, as they pray for the priest’s speedy recovery.

“These barbaric criminals masquerading as herders have shown total disregard for human life and the sanctity of our communities,” the Governor said. “Their cowardly attacks on innocent natives will no longer be tolerated.”

Reaffirming his commitment to the safety and security of Benue residents, the Governor stood firmly with the state’s traditional institutions, which have recently called for the immediate evacuation of criminal herders and their terrorist collaborators from Benue lands.

He also called on security agencies to intensify efforts in protecting communities and to ensure the swift and just apprehension of those responsible.

“It is imperative that these criminal elements and their accomplices are brought to justice in accordance with the laws of our land,” Kula added.

The Governor urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity, while directing security forces to rescue those abducted alongside Fr. Atongu.

“As we mourn the tragic loss of our peace-loving brothers and sisters, we must stand united to eliminate the menace of violence and restore lasting peace in our communities,” the Governor stated.
