The Zamfara State Police Command has confirmed the abduction of two councillors and an Imam by suspected gunmen in Tsauni community, Gusau Local Government Area.

The command’s spokesperson, DSP Yazid Abubakar, disclosed the incident to journalists on Thursday, stating that the victims were seized on Wednesday evening around 7:00 p.m., shortly after prayers.

According to him, the councillors represent Gidan Gona and Tsibiri wards in Maradun Local Government Area, while the third victim is the community’s Imam. They were reportedly taken from the front of their homes.

NAN reports that Tsauni community, which lies behind the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) headquarters in Gusau, has been home to internally displaced persons (IDPs) affected by banditry from surrounding villages.

Abubakar said police operatives had been deployed to the area and efforts were underway to secure the release of the abducted persons. He urged residents to provide timely and useful information to aid security operations.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of Maradun Local Government, Sanusi Gamagiwa, confirmed the attack, noting that six persons were initially abducted.

“They later released three people and went away with the two councillors and the Imam. As of now, we have not been contacted with any demands,” Gamagiwa stated.
