Igbo Highlife Music Icon, Godwin ‘Kabaka’ Opara is dead

Renowned Igbo highlife legend, Godwin ‘Kabaka’ Opara, has passed away at the age of 77.

His death was confirmed in a statement released by his record label, Derda Promotions.

The statement reads: “Derda Promotions mourns the loss of our revered artist, Godwin Kabaka Opara, a trailblazing icon in the realm of Highlife music, who breathed his last on March 21st, 2024.”

Kabaka, known for his prowess as a songwriter and guitarist, co-founded The Oriental Brothers International Band in 1973. The band gained widespread recognition, both locally and internationally, for its socially conscious compositions.

In 1976, Kabaka embarked on a solo career and established The Kabaka International Guitar Band, where he continued to showcase his musical talent.

Throughout his illustrious career, Kabaka released a total of 14 albums, leaving behind a rich musical legacy that will be cherished by generations to come.
