John Fashanu Sues Nigerian Police for £100,000 Over Arrest

Former England international John Fashanu is suing the Nigerian police for £100,000, alleging unlawful arrest and mistreatment over multiple charges including criminal conspiracy, threat to life, intimidation, and trespassing.
The 62-year-old, who denies all allegations, says the charges stem from a land dispute with investors who agreed to pay over £500,000 for his 22-acre property.
According to The Mirror, Fashanu was arrested after confronting contractors erecting a fence on the land in question. He claims that on December 16, he, his wife Vivian, and their lawyer were subjected to “arrest, detention, and inhuman treatment” for approximately three hours.
Fashanu further alleges his rights were violated through “intermittent constraints of his personal liberty” and described the incident as a “gross unconstitutional violation.”
His legal representative, Mr. Chigbu, confirmed that all three have fulfilled their bail conditions and have been granted administrative bail by the police.
Fashanu, a former striker for Norwich City, Wimbledon, and Aston Villa, is best known for helping Wimbledon win the FA Cup in 1988 and earned two caps for England during his playing career.
