Kano Governor empowers street beggars with N10,000, threatens to take any one who beg again to court
Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, has empowered 60 street beggars in the state.
This comes after the state government placed a ban of street begging in the state.
According to the State’s Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Zahra’u Muhammad-Umar, who made the announcement, the state government will take one found on the street begging to court.
“As you have been given empowerment package, anyone found on the street again will be taken to court,” she told the beneficiaries.
The commissioner added that the state government empowered 60 women and youths with N10,000 each in addition to entrepreneurial skills. She said some of the beneficiaries were picked from the street and under the bridges.
Mrs. Muhammad-Umar while speaking at the presentation of the empowerment program to the beneficiaries, also disclosed that the package is extended to people living with disabilities for them to take care of themselves so as to quit street begging.
The beneficiaries were also giving sewing machine, soya beans, beans millet, rice, freezers, small generating sets, and many other valuable things.
