Liverpool vs Arsenal: Slot defends Arteta, calls Gunners a ‘special team’

Liverpool manager Arne Slot has praised Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta for building a “special” team, ahead of their Premier League showdown at Anfield on Sunday evening.

Slot’s comments came as a defense of Arteta, who has been under scrutiny following Arsenal’s recent exit from the UEFA Champions League at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain and their failure to secure any silverware this season.

Despite the criticism, Slot believes Arteta deserves admiration for the tactical flexibility and identity he has instilled in his squad.

“Mikel should get, in my opinion, a lot of credit for the way his team plays,” Slot told reporters at his pre-match press conference.

“Arsenal can play almost every style. That alone is a major accomplishment. Whether it’s playing off set-pieces, defending deep, pressing high, or building from the back  they do it all, and they do it well.”

He added that such versatility is rare, even among long-serving managers, and is a mark of exceptional coaching.

“They’re hard to analyse because you don’t know what to expect. That’s what makes them special. Not many teams can adapt and still maintain quality across all areas of the game.”

Sunday’s match will see Arsenal give a guard of honour to newly crowned Premier League champions Liverpool, having fallen 15 points behind them in the table.

Despite finishing the season without a trophy since their 2020 FA Cup triumph, Arteta’s work continues to receive plaudits from fellow managers like Slot.
