Lookman responds to criticism with two goals at Empoli
Ademola Lookman delivered a stunning performance, scoring twice as Atalanta thrashed Empoli 5-0 in a commanding response to recent criticism from coach Gian Piero Gasperini.
After a midweek penalty controversy, Lookman returned to the starting lineup and played a crucial role in the dominant victory.
Davide Zappacosta opened the scoring with a deflected cross before Lookman set up Mateo Retegui for Atalanta’s second goal.
The Nigerian forward then showcased his skill with a brilliant solo strike before halftime and added a second with a calm finish after the break. Zappacosta wrapped up the emphatic win with a late goal.
Despite the convincing result, tensions lingered as Lookman appeared to avoid shaking hands with Gasperini after being substituted.
The victory moves Atalanta within two points of second-placed Napoli, keeping them firmly in the title race.
