Real Madrid clinched this season’s La Liga title after Girona secured a 4-2 victory over their arch-rivals, Barcelona, on Saturday evening.
Real Madrid secured a resounding 3-0 win against Cadiz at the Santiago Bernabeu and anxiously awaited the result of the Catalan derby between Barcelona and Girona.
Since 1941, no Catalan team has finished above Barcelona in La Liga; however, Girona, competing in only their fourth La Liga season, trailed 2-1 before conceding a penalty, which was converted by Robert Lewandowski. Three rapid goals followed, securing them a coveted Champions League place.
While Girona fans celebrated in the stands, Real Madrid supporters gathered at the Bernabeu, watching the pivotal match unfold on the big screen.
Real Madrid players also observed the Girona victory over Barca from inside the stadium and were seen leaving after their championship status was confirmed.
