Osun Assembly approves 6-month jail or N250,000 fine for public road skating
The Osun State House of Assembly has moved to criminalize skating on public roads or sidewalks, proposing penalties that include six months’ imprisonment or a fine of at least N20,000.
This development came during deliberations on the “Osun State Skating Restriction Bill 2025” at the committee of the whole sitting held Tuesday in Abeokuta.
While presenting the committee’s report on the bill, the Speaker and Chairman of the Committee, Mr. Adewale Egbedun, stated that skating should be restricted to indoor environments, describing it as an indoor recreational activity.
He noted that once the bill is passed, citizens would be empowered to arrest individuals found skating in unauthorized public spaces and hand them over to law enforcement.
Egbedun also explained that both the magistrate and high courts in Osun would have concurrent jurisdiction to try offenders under the proposed law.
“Anyone caught skating or using roller skates on public roads or sidewalks shall be guilty of an offence and liable on conviction to a minimum of six months imprisonment or a fine not less than N250,000, or both,” he said.
Following the discussion, the House again convened in the committee of the whole to continue deliberations on the “Osun State Multi-Door Court House Establishment Bill 2025.”
The House adjourned its sitting to Monday, May 12.
