Pope Leo reacts to Yelewata attack, calls it ‘terrible massacre’ in Benue
Pope Leo has expressed deep sorrow and offered prayers for the victims of what he described as a “terrible massacre” in Benue State, Nigeria, where over 200 people were reportedly killed in a brutal attack on Yelwata community in Guma Local Government Area.
Speaking during his Sunday Angelus from St. Peter’s Square, the Pontiff condemned the growing wave of violence in Nigeria and called for peace, justice, and protection of vulnerable communities.
According to the Pope, many of the victims were internally displaced persons (IDPs) who had taken refuge at a Catholic mission in the area, making the attack even more tragic.
“I am praying for security, justice, and peace in Nigeria,” Pope Leo said.
“In a special way, I am thinking of the rural Christian communities of Benue State, who have been relentless victims of violence.”
