See how to use Twitter in Nigeria despite ban

As Nigerian government suspended Twitter ‘operations’ indefinitely in the country, a tech specialist argued that there is a way to circumvent the ban and use the site.

In a statement on Friday, Nigeria’s communications minister Lai Mohammed announced the suspension, citing persistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence as a reason for the suspension.

Nigeria is the biggest Twitter market in Africa, with a total of 93.5 million users.

While many countries at one point in time suspended Twitter, China had permanently banned the microblogging site.

An IT professional, Adebowale Adekoya, told DAILY NIGERIAN that despite ban, Nigerian Twitter users can still access Twitter services using Virtual Private Networks, VPNs services such as Tor Browser, CloudFlare among others.

He said even in China, people still access Twitter through VPN.

“It was reported that Chinese government can still go as far as blocking these VPNs’ ASN or IPs allowing access to blocked internet-based services once they become popular in the country.

“VPN will give the user the opportunity to anonymously visit another network via a proxy network.

According to ExpressVPN, VPN unblocks a site by running internet data through an encrypted tunnel and hiding your IP address and location through proxying.
