Senate Minority Whip defects from ADC to NDC

The Senate Minority Whip, Tony Nwoye (Anambra North), has left the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and moved to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

Nwoye said his exit was driven by the lingering legal disputes affecting his former party.

His resignation letter was read during Wednesday’s plenary by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, where the lawmaker pointed to instability within the ADC as a key factor behind his decision.

“I write to formally notify you of my resignation from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and my intention to defect to the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC),” Senator Nwoye stated.

He further explained that “internal divisions and the ongoing multiple litigations at the Federal High Court,” alongside a recent court ruling, had weakened the party’s cohesion and stability.

The development follows the earlier defection of two senators, Victor Umeh and Rufai Hanga, who joined the NDC on Tuesday.

With Nwoye’s switch, the NDC’s representation in the Senate has risen to four members, including its leader, Henry Seriake Dickson.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) holds five seats, while the ADC retains seven senators, keeping its position as the leading opposition party in the Senate.
